API 5L Grade B Pipe
- API 5L Specification for Line Pipe
Line pipe, commonly called "steel refrigeration bending profile," is a hollow, square-section steel pipe. It is composed of square-cross-sectional-size steel from hot-rolled or cold-rolled strips or coils as the foundation material by cold bending, processing, and forming, and then high-frequency welding. Pipeline pipe is used for gas, water, and oil transfer in the oil and gas business, and it comes in two types: seamless and welded pipe with flat ends, threaded ends, and socket ends.
Scope
API 5L Specification specifies requirements for the manufacture of two product specification levels (PSL 1 and PSL 2) of seamless and welded steel pipe for use in pipeline transportation systems in the petroleum and natural gas industries.
The product specification level is abbreviated as PSL. PSL1 and PSL2 are the product specification levels for pipes, while PSL1 and PSL2 are the quality levels. PSL2 is higher than PSL1. Because the two specification levels differ not only in inspection requirements but also in chemical composition and mechanical properties when ordering according to API 5L, the contract terms must include the product specification level, i.e., PSL1 or PSL2, in addition to the usual indicators such as specification and steel grades according to API 5L, the contract terms must include the product specification level, i.e., PSL1 or PSL2, in addition to the usual indicators such as specification and steel grade. In terms of chemical composition, tensile qualities, impact work, non-destructive testing, and so on, PSL2 is tighter than PSL1. PSL1 is not required to perform impact characteristics; however, PSL2 is required to perform impact characteristics on all steel grades except X80.
